Hunter Schafer on Moving Beyond Transgender Roles: “I Want to Be a Girl and Finally Move On”

Breaking Free from Labels: Hunter Schafer Embraces New Acting Horizons Beyond Transgender Roles

Hunter Schafer, widely recognized for her powerful portrayal of transgender teenager Jules Vaughn in HBO’s acclaimed series Euphoria, has become a significant figure in the media for transgender representation. However, the actress, who is herself transgender, is now eager to explore roles that don’t focus on her gender identity.

In a recent interview with GQ, Schafer expressed her desire to expand her acting career beyond the confines of transgender roles. “I don’t want to be [reduced to] that, and I find it ultimately demeaning to me and what I want to do,” the 25-year-old shared. “I worked so hard to get to where I am, past these really hard points in my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on.”

Since her breakout role in Euphoria, Schafer has been inundated with offers to play transgender characters. While she acknowledges the importance of her role in increasing visibility for the transgender community, she is also determined to ensure that her career isn’t solely defined by it.

“I know for a fact that I’m one of the most famous trans people in media right now,” Schafer noted. “And I do feel a sense of responsibility, and maybe a little bit of guilt, for not being more of a spokesperson. But ultimately, I really do believe that not making it the centerpiece to what I’m doing will allow me to get further. And I think getting further and doing awesome s–t, in the interest of ‘the movement,’ will be way more helpful than talking about it all the time.”

Schafer’s journey in Euphoria began in 2019, where she not only played the role of Jules but also contributed creatively behind the scenes, co-writing and co-executive producing an episode of the series. Her work on the show has been a major milestone in her career, but it is clear that she is ready to take on new challenges that reflect her growth as an artist and individual.

Before her rise to fame, Schafer was already a passionate advocate for transgender rights. She came out as transgender in the ninth grade and became a prominent voice in the fight against North Carolina’s controversial HB2 law in 2016. The law required individuals in schools and state facilities to use restrooms corresponding with the sex listed on their birth certificates, sparking widespread controversy. Schafer’s activism during this time, including writing essays and appearing on local news, established her as both a role model and a lightning rod for debate.

Reflecting on her past, Schafer credits her parents for their unwavering support during those challenging times. Their guidance helped her navigate the complexities of her identity and public life, setting the stage for her future successes.

As Schafer continues to push boundaries and redefine her career, her journey serves as an inspiration not just for the transgender community, but for anyone striving to break free from societal expectations and pursue their true passions.
